new bearings on krankshaft...

today, for the first time, i took an engine apart.
 i got it as a spare with my bike and thought i'd check it out.
 the right big-end bearing was a goner and the krankshaft was all blue due to overheating.
 
 now my question...
 
 could there be any reason for someone to buy a whole other engine in stead of getting the existing engine rebuild?
 (and i'm not talking cost effectiveness <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">
 
 i.o.w. :
 what would make an engine an unrepaerable engine?
 
 and could i still use the right side of the crankshaft, while it's all blue and all?

Hi Ief !
 
 One reason to sell a motor instead of rebuilding it is, if the chain has destroyed the Motorblock. Or if the nipples of the bearings on the crankshaft have rotated in the Motorblock. This happens quite often ! In this case you can fix the bearings into the Block with a strong Loctite. Or you have to rebuilt the motorblock. (Put on new material)
 Today it should be no problem to fix such destroyed motorblocks...

 Unreparable is not possible in case of the RD-engine. But you have to think about the costs of the spare parts. Sometimes it's easier to buy a "new" engine. Calculate some new pistons, a new crankshaft, some ball bearings etc.
 
 The case of your crankshaft is difficult; please show some pics; but "normally" I wouldn't do it.

 the bearing holders look fine and also no sign of a chain ratling around <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">
 
 i have to find me a place where i can store pics then i will show them...

 I think you need a new one it seems as it was really hot! It`s not just a bit, the whole thing is blue or am i wrong?

 it's blue all over, more where the big end is connected ofcourse...
 
 it could be a good thing while the steel gets harder this way, on the other hand it tends to break more easely <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">
 
 but seriously, think i can mark it "a goner"?
